When Jake Thompson, a fifteen-year-old debate champ, finishes his closing arguments to wild applause, he searches the audience for his mother but can’t find her.  As he walks out of the school, he is met by his Principal and is promptly escorted to an awaiting police car for a ride to the hospital. Catherine Quinn, a thirty-two-year-old rising star on the French faculty at a New York university, received word that her mother is on life support in Chicago. Catherine has not seen her mother in fifteen years.  Jake has never met his half sister, Catherine.  Catherine now has custody of Jake, and now her life is turned upside down.  It’s a story of how change effects growth, and how growing up is not a destination but a journey.
